Below is a letter from Colleen.
Hello,

My Name is Colleen Big Spring. I am a member of the Blackfeet Tribe, which is located in the northwestern part of Montana.

There are many influences in the making of my art. Recycling has always been a traditional concept for many Native Americans, after all we were the first to “Go Green”.

What some people might consider trash, I find a reuse for these objects and have turned them into art, such as broken arrows, fishing pole, and empty casings.

Like most other Artists my artwork has evolved over time. One of the biggest influences in my art is the use of “Life Lessons.” I have learned to take a bad situation, which happens to all of us, and use the emotions and thoughts and to redirect the energy to create a piece of art and a story to fall behind it. (And it’s good therapy!).

“Wishes for Jenny” comes from a young mother that was in need of a liver transplant.

“Love Thy Brother” comes from three different stories of overcoming life’s trials and tribulations.

“For The Ones That Got Away” Speaks for itself.

While teaching my Daughter how to weave a Dream Catcher, over time she would often forget and again ask me how to weave one. So I thought of a Life Lesson that would teach her and she would remember.
Sometimes in life you take a step forward. You must sometimes go up and over obstacles and sometimes you must take a step backward in order to move forward.
